Warmth is a weapon
Every plank the reformers stole cost the movement ten thousand members, because most people are not socialists, they are tired. The embrace removes the reason to join.

The raids gave us martyrs and the prison made me larger than the platform. A center that attacks the movement is funding it.
Purity against power
The permanent temptation, and it arrives exactly when power is on the table. A movement that prefers being right to being paid will choose the split every time.
The balance sheet of governing
A movement that holds an office is priced by the office. Snow removal prices the brand more surely than any debate.

1894
Led the Pullman strike, went to jail for it, and came out a socialist. The state's answer made the argument better than the argument had.
1912
Six percent of the presidential vote, the movement's high-water mark, with a membership that never passed a fraction of the country.
1918–1920
Ten years' sentence for a speech against the war. Ran for president from a cell and polled close to a million votes: the martyr's dividend, banked publicly.
1920s
Watched the reformers legislate the workable planks while the movement kept the rhetoric. The members went where the planks went, and they did not come back.
