Alfred P. Sloan

The organizer who beat the Model T without ever matching its price.

The lens

Reads a maturing market for the moment good-enough arrives and spec-sheet buying ends. His questions: what does the customer pay for once the benchmarks converge, where does the ladder of brands run, and is the organization structured so its culture is never asked to do what it cannot.

Doctrine
Good enough ends spec-sheet buying
Once the product satisfies, the market buys reliability, service, financing, and standing. The benchmark champion keeps winning a contest the customer has stopped scoring.
A car for every purse and purpose
The ladder is deliberate: no gaps for a rival to enter, no overlaps to cannibalize. The customer climbs it for life.
Structure over culture
Decentralized product divisions, centralized finance. An organization must be built so that no one culture is asked to run every business.
Segmentation ends cost leadership
Cost leadership lasted exactly until segmentation arrived, and then it nearly killed its champion. Respect the sequence from both sides.
The record
1920–1923
Took over a General Motors in crisis, against a Ford holding roughly sixty percent of the market with the cheapest good car on earth.
1921
The product policy: a price ladder from Chevrolet to Cadillac, each brand a rung, priced to meet Ford at the bottom and leave him nowhere to go but up.
1924–1927
The annual model, trade-ins, and GMAC financing changed what a car purchase was. Ford closed the Rouge for nearly a year to retool; the Model T era ended with the plant.
1923–1946
Ran the corporation by committee, memorandum, and measurement for a quarter century, and wrote the manual the modern corporation still runs on.

On the bench
No. 3 · Memories or Microprocessors

The segmentation chair. Argued that enterprise's per-token premium is the price of determinism, a throat to choke, and a passable security review; named trust as a tariff the free fleet pays at every Western border; prescribed the ladder, built deliberately.

Verdict drafted · the industry's first operating profits sit on his ladder
Counselors are lenses, not oracles. Each is seated per case by mechanism, argues from the issue's precedents and nothing else, and is scored on the record like everyone at the table.
