Bill Gates

The founder who turned the biggest software company on earth in seven months with one memo, and paid the bill for a decade.

The lens

Reads every platform fight for the layer where other people's investment accumulates. His questions: what is the standard everyone writes to, does the challenger's position pass the hardware test, and has the incumbent declared the wave in writing or assigned it to the P&L it threatens.

Doctrine
The standard is the business
IBM believed the machine was the business. The business was the layer other people's investment cannot leave: developers' code, users' files, trained habits. The clones destroyed IBM's margins and every clone paid Microsoft.
Declare the wave in writing
A threat assigned less than the highest importance gets managed by the P&L it threatens. The memo is the reorganization's birth certificate.
Rent what you lack, ship it whole
The Spyglass license bought the year that beat Netscape, and it worked because the rented thing shipped at full strength into the widest channel on earth. A rented future shipped caged is domestication.
Developers are the moat
Ship your own applications on your own platform, and author the standards, including the open ones. A protocol you wrote is a pen you keep holding.
The record
1980
The IBM contract, signed non-exclusively by a company in a hurry that held software in contempt. The clause built the largest fortune of the age.
1990–1995
Windows and Office became the standard the industry wrote to; the harness of the PC era, with the applications and the platform under one roof.
1995
The Internet Tidal Wave, May 26: named the wave, named Netscape, and turned the battleship in public on Pearl Harbor Day. Eighteen months from memo to a free browser in every box.
1998–2001
United States v. Microsoft: the bill for the turn. A breakup order salvaged into a consent decree, and a supervised decade in which the company that had just proven it could turn missed search and missed the phone.

On the bench
No. 3 · Memories or Microprocessors

Supplementary witness, recalled at the author's request. Testified that the model is the hardware and the harness is the OS, and set the hardware test: the lab that lets its harness run rival models at open expense to its own drum sales is playing for the OS position.

Witness session on the record · the Gates test logged as signal 06
No. 4 · The Second Tidal Wave

Presiding, seated opposite his own company. Ordered the wave declared in writing, named the crown jewels that survive any model outcome, and pointed at the ghost: the last full-aggression channel play summoned the regulator and cost the winning decade.

Verdict drafted · the memo discipline carried into No. 4b
Coined on the record
Counselors are lenses, not oracles. Each is seated per case by mechanism, argues from the issue's precedents and nothing else, and is scored on the record like everyone at the table.
