Marshall McLuhan

The professor who said the medium is the message, and was mistaken for an entertainer while being right.

The lens

Reads a radicalization for its channel. His questions: which gatekeeping monopoly just dissolved, what does the new channel pay, and who found the medium's second market first. Indifferent to content on principle, because the channel is not.

Doctrine
The medium is the message
The channel reshapes what a society can think before anyone argues about content. Study the pipe, then the water.
Every new medium dissolves a monopoly
Print broke the pulpit, the wire broke distance, the feed broke the editor. Each collapse cuts the cost of a counter-public to nothing, in both directions at once.
Ask what the channel pays
Every medium has a pay schedule, and most pay intensity better than accuracy. The flanks are simply the best-paid workers in the new economy.
Find the second market
Radio paid intensity and Coughlin collected, but it also paid intimacy, and Roosevelt cornered that market first. Out-shouting the flanks is bidding against the house.
The record
1951
The Mechanical Bride: read advertising as a culture reading itself. The method arrived before the fame.
1962
The Gutenberg Galaxy: print as the technology that remade the European mind, and the argument that a medium's arrival is the event, whatever gets printed.
1964
Understanding Media: the medium is the message, hot and cool, and the global village named. He predicted the village would be tribal and violent, a clause the optimists cut.
1965–1980
Celebrity, parody, and dismissal in roughly equal measure, while the forecasts kept landing. The entertainer's reputation outlived him; so did the accuracy.

No. 5 · Extremes Travel in Pairs

The medium regime chair. Showed every precedent sitting on a media transition with the same signature, and answered Corcyra's missing medium with the oldest one: war. Returned on the Roosevelt exception to ask which present channel pays intimacy, and who will live in it first.

Ruled: the bond market as the forcing function · the feed pays intensity
Counselors are lenses, not oracles. Each is seated per case by mechanism, argues from the issue's precedents and nothing else, and is scored on the record like everyone at the table.
