The general made emperor by his own troops, who ended a century of coups with a banquet and no executions.

The lens

Reads every faction fight for the weapon that must be retired and the price that retires it. His questions: what real thing can be exchanged for the army, is the offer poured from strength, and who would the punishment turn into a martyr.

Doctrine
The true exchange
His generals were offered estates for armies, a real price honestly paid, and it held. A banquet that offers nothing real is a trap, and everyone at the table knows it.
No martyrs
Every strangled general seeds three rebellions. He strangled none, and the coup cycle starved to death in one generation.
Pour from a throne
The offer binds only when it comes from strength. Win something visibly first, so the wine is poured from a throne and never from a knee.
The banquet is personnel policy
Give the movement's generals somewhere better to be than the head of an army: real portfolio where their success serves the whole.

Chenqiao: his own troops draped the yellow robe on him while he slept, the fifth coup of the pattern in fifty years. He took the throne knowing exactly how thrones were taken.
961
The banquet: over wine, he invited his senior commanders to consider how easily any of them might wake in a yellow robe, and offered estates, marriages, and honors for their commands. Every man accepted. Every man died rich.
963–976
Replaced military governorships with civil administration and examination men; the armies answered to the center for the rest of the dynasty.
After 976
The dynasty ran three centuries without a successful military coup, in the civilization that had just produced five dynasties in fifty-three years.

The banquet chair. Translated the exchange for the present case: city governments, gavels, a leadership seat with portfolio, for standing down the primary weapon on swing terrain. The author's throne problem was sustained against his strength condition and answered with three thrones.
