The lens

Reads a movement for its cohesion and its staffing. His questions: where is the asabiyyah forming, who are the educated and the blocked, and how many ambitious men has the order produced beyond the offices available to absorb them.

Doctrine

Asabiyyah decides

Group feeling forms at the hungry edge, takes the comfortable center, and softens in three generations. The cycle is the constant; the names change.

The educated and the blocked

Insurgencies are staffed by surplus elites, never by the wretched, who lack leisure for ideology. Count the credentialed men the ladder has stalled.

The ladder is the variable

Technology decides how fast the flanks find each other. The surplus of ambitious, aggrieved men decides whether there is anything to find.

Absorb the officers separately

Counter-elite absorption is its own instrument, apart from fixing the grievance. A bill addresses the crowd; the underemployed graduate who would rather run the revolution needs a payroll.

Served and survived the courts of Fez, Granada, Tlemcen, and Béjaïa: minister, envoy, prisoner, and conspirator by turns. Politics as fieldwork.

1375–1377

Withdrew to a desert castle and wrote the Muqaddimah: the cycle of asabiyyah, the rise and softening of dynasties, and the economics of states, laid out before the histories they explain.

1384–1406

Chief judge in Cairo, repeatedly appointed and dismissed as the factions turned. Applied the theory daily and kept revising the book.
