The deputy who sat inside a paired radicalization in 1848 and wrote down what the middle's death felt like.

The lens

Testifies, including against his own side. His subjects: dashed expectation as the recruiting sergeant, the middle's administrative suicide, and the one service the extremes perform that the center refused: saying plainly that something is intolerable.

Doctrine
Dashed expectation, not misery
Revolutions come when improvement was promised, tasted, and stalled. Both flanks recruit from those promised their parents' trajectory.
The middle dies partly by suicide
It becomes administrative, complacent, unable to name a wrong worth fighting, and then is surprised to find no one will die for the average.
Steal the intolerable thing
The center that survives never splits the difference. It names the grievance in the whole country's language and fixes it first.
Society cut in two
Those who possessed nothing united in common envy, those who possessed anything in common terror, and no one left standing between. That is the terminal reading; take it earlier.

Nine months in Jacksonian America produced Democracy in America: equality as the oncoming condition, studied where it was furthest advanced.
1848
Told the Chamber in January it was sleeping on a volcano. The barricades went up in February; he kept his seat while the moderate republic formed around him.
1848–1849
The June Days: watched Paris cut in two, served on the constitutional committee, and briefly ran the foreign ministry of a republic already dying.
1851–1856
Opposed the coup, was imprisoned briefly, and retired to write the Recollections and The Old Regime: the eyewitness account, and then the autopsy.
