Refuse other men's wars
The contest that decides the era is the only one worth bleeding for. Everything else is expenditure your rival inventories.
Count in decisive currencies
Not dollars: carrier months, interceptor stocks, the attention of governments. The ledger that matters is the one your rival keeps.
Build the bridge before leaving
A war entered for appearance can only be left across architecture: a structure takes the duty, and departure becomes a handover with documents.
Institutionalize the win
A victory not built into an institution dies with its author.
The record
1582–90
Declined the succession wars after Nobunaga's death; consolidated the Kantō while rivals spent themselves.
1592–98
Kept his armies out of Hideyoshi's Korean invasion, the era's great strategic bleed. Arrived at Sekigahara intact while the veterans arrived exhausted.
1600–1615
Won the decisive contest at Sekigahara, then spent fifteen years converting victory into the shogunate: the institution did the ruling for 250 years.
