The out-of-work diplomat who wrote down what power actually costs, and has been hated five centuries for the accounting.

The lens

Strips a polity to its two permanent humors and a case to its human bill. His questions: which channels have stopped carrying, who prospers under the old order and must therefore be hurt, and whether the prince is armed for the injury or merely eloquent about it.

Doctrine
The two humors
Every polity contains the great, who wish to command, and the people, who wish not to be commanded. The humors are permanent; the channels between them are not, and the pairing appears when the channels fail.
The new order's arithmetic
The innovator makes enemies of everyone who prospers under the old order and gains only lukewarm defenders. Price the reform in enemies before pricing it in money.
The unarmed prophet dies
Injury refused becomes injury received, terminally. The gentleman who will hurt no one of his own has chosen his ending, and it is Britannica's.
Once, early, from strength
Necessary injuries are done all at once, so the taste fades; benefits are doled out slowly, so the taste lasts. A purge by installments is a subscription to rebellion.
The record
1498–1512
Second Chancellor of Florence: ran the diplomacy and the citizen militia, and studied Cesare Borgia at close range as the specimen of the new prince.

The Medici returned. Dismissed, imprisoned, tortured with the rope, and exiled to the farm at Sant'Andrea. The republic he served fell in a season.
1513
The Prince, written in the evenings, dressed in the robes of the office he had lost. The job application that became the discipline's founding text.
1515–1519
The Discourses on Livy: the republic's book, and the two humors entered the record. Read together, the pair says the same thing to princes and to peoples: channels or knives.
