The president who met a paired radicalization at the bottom of a depression and broke it inside a single term.

The lens

Reads every insurgency as a symptom and hunts the disease. His questions: what does the movement's recruiter actually sell, who can sell it cheaper from power, and what happens to the movement when its best issue carries someone else's name. Treats repression as a donation to the repressed.

Doctrine
Steal the issue
Enact a governed version of the insurgency's best demand, at full price, with your own name on it. The movement keeps its rhetoric and loses its patient.
Make me do it
Respond to the movement as a leader moved by his people; never negotiate with it as a peer. Authorship is leadership.
No purge
The 1938 purge broke in his hand, and he entered it in his own files as the negative lesson. Dissidents financed by being attacked convert your cruelty into their payroll.

Coughlin held the largest audience on earth and lost it to a quieter voice. Every medium pays intensity; find what else it pays, and corner that market first.

1933
Took office at the bottom, closed the banks, and moved in a hundred days, before either flank could claim the emergency as its own.
1935
The Second New Deal: Social Security for Townsend's pensioners, the Wagner Act for labor's radicals, the WPA for the unemployed, the Wealth Tax aimed at Long's platform. Each insurgency's best issue, bought whole.
1936
Carried 46 of 48 states with the flanks' former constituencies inside his coalition; the remnant Union Party polled under 2 percent. "They are unanimous in their hate for me, and I welcome their hatred."
1938
The purge: campaigned against conservative Democrats in their own primaries and lost nearly every race. The one instrument he tried and retired.
